Kitchen Cabinet Painting: The Honest Math

Replacing cabinets is a five-figure decision. Refinishing them well is not — but only if the prep is real. What Baltimore–DC homeowners should know before booking.

The most valuable paint job in most homes is the one nobody calls painting. Cabinet refinishing turns a tired kitchen into a finished one for a fraction of replacement cost — and it is also where corners get cut most often, because the difference between a three-year finish and a ten-year finish is invisible on day one.

Refinish or replace?

If your boxes are sound, square, and well-laid-out, refinishing almost always wins the math. Replacement runs $15,000–$40,000 for a typical Baltimore kitchen; a professional refinish lands in the $3,000–$7,500 range depending on box count, door style, and condition. Replacement wins only when the layout itself is wrong, the boxes are water-damaged, or the doors are a style you cannot live with at any price.

What a real refinish includes

• Doors and drawers off, everything labeled. A crew that sprays doors in your kitchen is a crew to avoid.
• Full degrease. Kitchen grease defeats paint faster than anything else. TSP-class cleaning is not optional.
• Sanding and bonding primer. The primer is where adhesion is actually bought.
• Sprayed finish, not brushed. Brushed cabinets are a look; sprayed is the durable one. Ask which you are getting.
• Cure time, not just dry time. Waterborne enamels handle light use in days but reach full hardness in weeks. Ask what the crew says about the first week.

Questions that expose a weak quote

What primer? (If the answer is "it depends on what we find," that is actually the right answer.) What sheen, and why? What happens if a hinge hole strips? Who does the hinge and handle drilling for new hardware? A crew with answers is a crew with a system.
